Nettle

In a time when so many of us are overworked, undernourished, stressed, + depleted, Nettle comes to the rescue in all of its bright green glory. I love to offer new mamas a batch of my recovery tea after giving birth + Nettle is one of the key ingredients (among Red Raspberry + Lady’s Mantle). Nettle is incredibly nutritious + tasty + offers your body a way of recovering postpartum.

Nettle has been used for hundreds of years to treat pain in muscles, joints, skin issues, + anemia. Today, most people use it to aid urinary issues, sprains, strains, insect bites, + even hay fever. It’s one of those magical herbs that can bring healing in a lot of different ways.

Postpartum, it is very powerful because it has been known to help people add in much-needed iron as well as to fortify + increase breastmilk production. Nettle has more chlorophyll than any other herb along with vitamin A, C, D, + K; calcium; potassium; phosphorus; + iron. Nettle is particularly beneficial for leg cramps + other muscle spasms because of the high calcium content. The vitamins in nettle increase the iron in the blood + reduce the risk of hemorrhage. It also strengthens the blood vessels, which reduces the risk of hemorrhoids. And, maybe most happily, it builds energy without caffeine, which is a game changer for most postpartum people.

Nettle helps us feel stable + nourished in times of stress, overwork, + depletion. As the late herbalist Michael Moore said, “Nettle is green food your body recognizes + can help build blood, tissue, + self-empowerment.”
