Lady’s Mantle
I love the herbal component of what I do, which is sometimes different from what other Postpartum Doulas offer. I believe there is a lot that we can learn from the plants + herbs that have been used for hundreds, sometimes thousands of years + that there is so much good they can do!
When I visit a new mama, one of the things I always bring is a package of my Recovery Tea. Not only is it delicious + comforting, but it is filled with all kinds of healing + beneficial herbs. I’ve been starting to highlight the individual herbs that make up the mix (check out my first post on red raspberry here) to explain why this is a must in my postpartum recovery protocol.
Lady’s Mantle, like raspberry leaf, is a foundational herb for women’s health. They’re both in the rose family + have many overlapping healing qualities, but Lady’s Mantle offers a more profound medicine for menstrual imbalances, tissue repair, + wound healing.
The leaves are used to relieve menopausal symptoms (hot flashes, night sweats) + menstrual difficulties (it regulates the menstrual flow + soothes pain). In some cases of endometriosis, which results in excessive bleeding, Lady’s Mantle can tone + dry the womb.
I especially recommend it throughout the first weeks after giving birth to help the uterus regain its strength + shape. Lady’s Mantle is prized as one of the very best wound healing herbs, so it makes sense to partake postpartum (remember that when your placenta exits your body, it leaves behind a dinner-plate-sized wound!) You can even use Lady’s Mantle in a sitz bath to help soothe + heal any tearing that may have happened during birth.
It is important to note that Lady’s Mantle should be avoided during pregnancy + it’s always a great idea to check with your medical professional +/or a certified herbalist before using any herbal products.
